The Dharma Theater Ensemble with the inspiration of Venerable Master Hsing Yun and the guidance of GMC Administration, the Performing Arts Department and the Office of Student Affairs, presents a world premiere of the 2018 Star and Cloud Play Festival that showcase five plays written by GMC students inspired from the essence of Humanistic Buddhism in daily living motivated by the light the Venerable Master Hsing Yun brought to their life.

The play is about two sisters, Abby and Aya, and their process of letting go of the loss of their father.

The story revolves between the relationship of Delia as mother and Nicole as daughter, which is challenged by Delia’s traumatic event in the past. The play is inspired from the Nobel Prize winner for Literature Tony Morrison’s “SWEETNESS”.

Judgement and prejudice are everywhere. Some people tend to criticize other based on their appearance and make their negative assumption towards them. In many occasions we view the superficial attributes of a person but not its whole being.

The story of Lolo Pablo is inspired by the game “Three Acts of Goodness Dice Game”. The story is about an old garbage collector who has the goodness within, regardless of his status in life and the difficulties of being old. Lolo Pablo is such a good example of doing goodness that emphasizes generosity, sharing affinities, happiness and kindness to others.

“People with a beautiful face do not necessarily have a life that is full of happiness. People with a pure mind will be able to have a life that is full of joy.”

In a remote village in Mindanao, a Muslim family who traces their tradition in the name of the Qur’an, dwells within the imaginative idea of false belief and misconception. The play tackles about household issues like husband’s responsibility of finding for a decent job and polygamy and above all the Muslim’s strong stand, more than their own family, on Mindanao’s independence. Akmad, a member of the movement believes that Jihad is for the truth, to worship Allah unequivocally, and to prosecute evil and living with one’s own sake is not permissible. However, Nhor, his wife believes that Jihad is not only attained through violence or death. But the question of what measures the Jihad’s justification will always fall back to the intention. When does right become wrong?
